More than 4,200 social security numbers may be at risk after a hacker got into the University of Georgia’s campus server.
The University says numbers belonging to current, former, and prospective residents of graduate family housing may have been exposed during the unlawful access on December 29th and 31st.
After discovering the problem, the university took the server off-line and is still contacting each student to let them know that their information may have been exposed.
Stan Gatewood, UGA’s chief information security officer says it doesn’t appear that any information was actually accessed or misused.

Federal law now requires state Motor Vehicles departments to use a number other than the SSN for the driver’s license number.  If your license has not been renewed for several years and still shows your SSN as the ID number, you can request this be changed. You don’t need to wait until it expires to get one with a different number, though you may be charged a fee for the new issuance.
