Math can be a very challenging subject for most students. But, for one Stephens County High School teacher, the challenge is helping her students live successful lives. With 30 years of teaching under her belt, Carolyn Frady decided to say good-bye to the profession she loved so much. But, that didn’t keep her away for long. The following fall, she came back to a new challenge. And, it’s the dedication to her students which has earned her this month’s “Golden Apple Award.”
These students aren’t just taking any exam; they’re taking a “quizzy-poo.”
“You have to do something to draw them in,” says this month’s Golden Apple Award winner.
Like making up words to keep students interested in the lesson. Caroline Frady has used this method in her 31 years of teaching.
“I’m just delighted it helped them at all,” Frady tells Newschannel 32, which is one reason why the former math teacher decided to come out of retirement. When the Superintendent and the Stephens County Board of Education created a new course, they chose Mrs. Frady, and she jumped at the opportunity.
“We’re teaching SAT Prep. We’re just trying to get student’s score up to the necessary level they need to get them in the college they choose,” explains Frady.
In its first year, Mrs. Frady has already seen a dramatic improvement. The class average is 70-plus points per student.
“I think we had a very good start this year. I’d really like to see the enrollment climb. I’d like to see every student that’s college-bound improve their score,” continues Frady.
And, if the course continues, Mrs. Frady hopes to continue being apart of the Stephens County High School family. It’s the only high school she’s ever known, both as a student and as a teacher. And, it’s the passion she has for this profession that drives her students to succeed. That is why one of her former students nominated her for Newschannel 32’s “Golden Apple Award.” She’s our March winner.
“I see the kids doing well, going on to successful lives. And, I’m very proud to be apart of it,” adds Frady.
Mrs. Frady says her high school math teacher influenced her to become a teacher. And, she hopes to make that kind of impact on one of her students one day as well.
