This may seem like any other construction project right now, but if you wait about a week and a half, these water lines will soon transform into Habersham County’s life line.
It all started with their 50 year water plan.
Chairman Jim Butterworh, with the Habersham County Commission, tells NewsChannel 32, “What’s going on behind us is the culmination of the plan and three years of work. That’s being finished up in about a week and a half.”
Habersham County is drought proofing their community by tapping into Toccoa’s resources.
And by the time they’re finished, these lines will carry one million gallons of water per day to Habersham County.
Butterworh says, “I think we’re unifying government; were taking a region wide approach to solve this problem. It’s benefiting Stephens County and Habersham County.”
Without this project, Habersham County could face serious problems in the future.
According to Butterworh, surface water in rivers is the only major source of water for Habersham County.
The county’s next step is to build water plants and reservoirs.
Butterworh adds, “Reservoirs are definitely a possibility. It was a good year for building resvoirs as far as the state is concerned. We’d like to tap into that.”
Those key issues will be brought before Georgia Power and the Environmental Protection Division this Wednesday in hope their life - line will be extended in the future.
Habersham County’s long term water goals will be presented at a governmental meeting.
In three to five years, its possible Habersham County could be getting three million gallons of water from Stephens County, instead of one million.
