Scouting Report: East Hall Vikings

Although most high school football teams in Northeast Georgia will start their season this Friday, one team has already played. The East Hall Vikings took advantage of a GHSA loophole and started their season on Saturday. The Vikings fell 17-13 to Murray County on Saturday night in Chatsworth. It was Murray County’s first win since 2005. As for the Vikings they went 1 and 9 last season, but although they’re off to a rough start they do look to do better in 2008.

Scouting Report: North Oconee Titans

After going 1 and 18 in their first two football seasons, the North Oconee Titans have rebounded and they’ve gone a combined 16 and 4 over the last two seasons. But, they haven’t played a region schedule yet and so they haven’t had a chance to make the playoffs and the Titans are ready to prove themselves this year.

Scouting Report: Athens Academy Spartans

The Athens Academy Spartans have been the most successful programs in Northeast Georgia over the last two years. In each of the past two seasons, the Spartans have reached the state semifinals and the Georgia Dome. Although their seasons ended on the turf in both seasons.
But, head coach Michael Gunn will have to do some reloading this year.

The off-season for the Oconee County Warriors has had it’s share of ups and downs. Things got started on a down note when head coach Nick Saltaformaggio resigned, but things started to look up earlier this year when senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger verbally committed to play at UGA. The Warriors also now have a new coach in place and the O.C. is hoping for more ups than downs this year.

After last season 14 year head coach Scott Wilkins walked away from the team. There is a new head Jaguar in place and the new coach is concentrated on turning a group of individuals into a team.

So Coach Miller is looking to his big boys to step it up in 2008.

The Warriors hadn’t even had a winning season in 6 years - much less a playoff appearance. But a week 7 upset of Chestatee helped Gregg Segraves’ team get to the AAA State Playoffs for the first time in school history, and now Segraves’ Warriors are hoping to make a habit out of playoff runs.

Union County Coach Found Dead

Sad news out of Blairsville, Union County High School girl’s basketball and boy’s soccer coach Mike West was found dead early Thursday morning. West’s wife called 911 when he did not return home from hiking Wednesday. A search and rescue team found his body around daybreak Thursday morning.

In Gainesville today, Lakeview Academy basketball star David Pruett signed his letter of intent to play college basketball at Armstrong Atlantic in Savannah. Pruett led the Lion’s to their first region title in school history last season and was named the region player of the year. The four-year starter also leaves Lakeview with 1,961 career points which is second in school history. Pruett said he’ll carry the lessons he learned from playing under legendary coach Seth Vining with him to college.

Walker Signs New Book On UGA Campus

Over on campus today, Herschel Walker made an appearance. He was at the UGA bookstore signing copies of his new memoir, Breaking Free: My Life with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Walker was also the subject of a special profile segment on “ABC’s Nightline,” where he told Bob Woodruff that his disorder caused him to threaten the lives of others, and even himself. Former Dawg, Todd, Takes Lead at Day 2 of ARFC

Round two of the Athens Regional Foundation Classic at Jennings Mill today and five guys started the day tied for the lead. Many were within striking distance, including some former UGA golfers. One guy ended today right at the very top. Brendon Todd, former bulldog, is a sponsor’s exemption and was in the pack at four under at the start of the day. -4 was two back of the lead, but he pulled a repeat performance today. He shot his second straight 68 and he lands at eight under par, out in front by himself.

Felton Shaves Mustache For Students

On campus to day at Georgia, get out your buzzer. Georgia head men’s basketball coach Dennis Felton promised the students at UGA that if the last place dogs won the SEC Tournament, he’d shave his trademark mustache. Against all odds of course, that’s exactly what happened. So today on the quad, Felton got one more close shave on the season. Symbolic of those two overtime games they won in the SEC I guess. Felton talked about how he paid back the students for being so good to him and the program.

A great night in Danielsville tonight. It was Jake Westbrook night. The Cleveland Indians pitcher was honored at his alma mater, Madison County High School. Westbrook is in town for the Indians preseason series with the Braves and stopped by to see his Red Raider number 12 jersey retired. He still lives in Danielsville in the off season, and we caught up with him to talk about being honored by his old school.

Madison County Re-focused and Reaching For State Title

It took a fourth quarter rally, but the Flowery Branch Falcons pulled out a win against Sandy Creek on Tuesday and they are one of the eight AAA teams in the state still playing basketball. The victory was sweet for all of the Falcons, but as Cody Chaffins tells us, the opportunity to keep playing basketball is special for our Dodge Athlete of the Week, Josh Barrett.
